Senate Bill 244: Building a Healthier Future Through Workforce Investments

SB 244 aims to increase access to care by growing New Hampshire's health care workforce. Building on our work from last year, this bill would invest in important programs and initiatives that attract, train, and retain health care workers within our state. The initiatives include the creation of a public-private Health Care Workforce Recruitment and Retention Hub, pipeline investments in the New Hampshire Area Health Education Centers (AHECs), and Medicaid reimbursement rate increases, among many other important provisions.
The Bill's Progress
The Senate Health and Human Services Committee held a public hearing on SB 244 on February 5. The committee then held an executive session on March 5, voting unanimously on a recommendation to pass the bill with an amendment. Although the amendment removes some provisions, it still includes many key pieces like the Health Care Workforce Recruitment and Retention Hub, Medicaid reimbursement rate increases for opioid treatment providers, and support for NH Needs Caregivers, among others. On March 13, the Senate unanimously passed the bill.
Since the bill has funding components, it was sent to the Senate Finance Committee for further review, which unanimously voted on a recommendation to pass the bill on March 18. On March 27, the Senate voted unanimously to pass Senate Bill 244, then tabled the bill for possible inclusion in the state budget bills when they cross over from the House.
